Considering a new Mac for use with Pro Tools 8. Pro Tools 8 is not yet compatible with Snow Leopard, so I'm wondering if it possible to order a new Mac with an older version of OS X?
Or, can you downgrade for free once you purchase?
Thanks!

In a word? No. You may be able to get some stock that still has Leopard pre-loaded but that gets much more difficult as time goes on. Any hardware released since Mac OS X 10.6 was released (the new iMacs, MacBooks, and Mac mini for example is not supported (and may not even boot) with Mac OS X 10.5. The licensing of the computer with the OS also doesn't provide downgrade rights (but this is a case of where Apple really doesn't care). You can also try to obtain a Mac with Leopard by either buying one from the Refurbished store or second hand however.

I don't think you can buy one. If you get the discs, you can legally put 10.5 on it.

Unfortunately, no. You'll need to buy a Leopard install disk "used", and do a clean install on your new comp. At some point, hardware may not be compatible with Leopard, but I am unaware of any current issues. Don't settle for Snow Leopard. PC users didn't settle for Vista, and eventually MSFT had to offer the XP downgrade as an option. Eventually Apple will have to either fix Snow Leopard's problems, or offer the downgrade option.
