I'm using Apache with a directory listing by mod_index

Now I'm using a basic http-auth to ensure that some files can only be accessed with the credentials

<Files *.dat>
 require valid-user
</Files>

Until the basic authentication is performed, those files won't show up in the directory listing. Is there a way to show those files in the listing, but still require authentication if the users wants to access them?

I can only think about strange combinations with Limit and File-directives. But as far as I know, mod_index evaluates those statements, too
