I'm getting weird behavior using top in Arch Linux. When filtering by user (fred) I get a different list of processes depending on the sort order.

In descending PID order:

 PID USER %CPU %MEM COMMAND
1805 fred 0.0 dbus-daemon
1682 fred 0.2 vim
1623 fred 0.1 less

Typing R to reverse the order:

1682 fred 0.2 vim

I'm not limiting the number of tasks displayed. If I remove the user filtering I get a long list of processes so it's not limited by terminal size. I can quickly toggle between sort order using R (no delay) and I get the odd output above. It appears toggling between sort order always displays the same number of processes, just not the same list in reverse.

What's going on here?

Can we please get the whole commands you're using? –  Bobby Sep 16 '13 at 14:29

It's top, that's the whole command. I then filter by user within the application. –  Frédéric LeBel Sep 16 '13 at 17:35
