I have a Linux machine that has no GUI with an external hard drive containing an ext4 partition on it. I have installed truecrypt but cannot figure out how to encrypt the ext4 partition located on /dev/sda1 from the command line. Any pointers to examples of how to do this would be appreciated.

Here is a great tutorial to encrypt a physical volume on commandline.

That should answer your question.
