Does the -remote flag work with the latest version of Firefox, on OSX more specifically?

I did a lot of reading but it's hard to know what's current and what's not. From what I read, it seems like the flag should be possible to use, but I can't figure out how.

I tried the flag by passing both 'ping()' and 'openURL(url.com,new-tab)' first a specific profile being run in a different instance and then just to the "default" instance. Also tried instances created with -new-instance, with and without a profile specified.

In all cases I get the "Firefox already running" error.

Has anyone successfully used -remote in Firefox 24? Perhaps even on OSX?
