How do I find the manufacturer to upgrade the BIOS?

link|improve this question
It'll be helpful by telling us the model number of the motherboard, or at least provide a decent picture of the motherboard... – deddebme Nov 3 '09 at 6:56
@deddebme: Or he is asking about ways to know that without seeing physically the motherboard, I guess. – Gnoupi Nov 3 '09 at 11:04

Download cpuz from cpuid.org -- It can identify your motherboard for you.

+1 This is, by far, the easiest method. – alex Nov 3 '09 at 9:53
cpuz is indeed a great reference to find information about CPU, RAM, and motherboard. – Gnoupi Nov 3 '09 at 10:15

If you're using Intel, you can identify the chipset by using the Intel Processor Identification Utility 4.2.

See this very detailed article for a general method : PC Mainboard Identification.

I used these instructions and they helped me find the correct motherboard manufacturer

download and run SIW.

in the left hand navigation pane under Hardware, click on Motherboard.

right below click on BIOS to identify the version currently installed.

SIW is also a good solution, though maybe less immediate than cpuz, as it provides much more information. – Gnoupi Nov 3 '09 at 10:26
both programs belong into techie's toolbox anyway. :) – Molly7244 Nov 3 '09 at 14:46

What I do is run dmidecode, or lshw, if available.
