I'm looking for software to facilitate GUI design. There are many good questions on this topic already, but none contain what I need:

  1. XP style, not stencil/sketch/wireframe/mockup.
  2. Custom widgets, because we use more than standard GUI elements.
  3. Save as templates, to use for other screens later.
  4. snap-to other elements (ForeUI does this brilliantly).
  5. Export to graphic (JPG/PNG).
  6. Export to XML or SWT.
  7. nice-to-have: Export to Word as documentation (Axure does this).

I think the ForeUI tool you mentioned already meet most of your requirements.

For XP style: http://www.foreui.com/hl/feature_skinnable.htm

It also support user defined widgets. The lacking things may be the XML/SWT/Word exporting.

I've done extensive testing and analysis, and I'm now leaning toward this product too. There are some things it can't (yet) do, but most of these are minor issues. – Torben Gundtofte-Bruun Nov 5 '09 at 11:59

I don't think it'll do everything you want, but have you looked at MS C# Express editions.

It might be a bit over the top, but it can do a lot of what you want.

If you create a WinForms application you'll get:

  1. XP style
  2. Custom widgets - but you need to write code
  3. Snap to other elements

I've not looked at the export features, but you can run the application and take a screen shot that way.

Good answer (it's not your fault their website is uninformative and utterly horrible), except I forgot to mention another requirement: must not be a programming tool. – Torben Gundtofte-Bruun Nov 5 '09 at 12:02
