Super User is a question and answer site for computer enthusiasts and power users. It's 100% free, no registration required.

Recently I configured a VPS with cPanel and set up a FTP account. Currently my VPS only has an IP address instead of using a hostname.

I can use terminal command "ftp" to login and transfer files.

However, when I use other FTP client (such as FireFTP), the log shows it's connected, but actually it's not because the files are not shown and the client is stuck at "Working" status.

If I use a browser to access ftp://xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx, after I input the username/password, Chrome says it cannot connect while Firefox is stuck at connecting state.

I have tried different configurations on the FTP server, but no luck. Could you shed some light on this? at

quickie guess: are all clients configured the same for passive vs. active ftp? Chrome should default to passive though. Not sure about FireFTP –  Rich Homolka Oct 1 '13 at 1:49
