If you mean learning about Linux/UNIX programming, "The Art of Unix Programming" by Eric S. Raymond is a must read, both in a technological and cultural sense.

Use it.
Start by moving around in the filesystem, looking for things, creating and deleting files. Choose your editor and learn how to use it properly.

Getting started with Linux will help you.

What Linux distribution you have? Consider installing Ubuntu because of its large community base.

For new Ubuntu users I highly recommend www.ubuntupocketguide.com – KeyboardMonkey Nov 5 '09 at 13:31

http://linuxcommand.org/ is a pretty good site to get the grasp of most fundamentals, but as already stated, the best way to learn it is to use it.
