Usually tests claim that this or that player has a "razor-sharp" picture or "minimal distortion in moving scenes" in comparison to other, cheaper players. This makes no sense to me. I don't want players to "sharpen" the image and I thought deblocking algorithms were written in stone in the h264 and VC-1 standards. Does anyone get this?

This is not a SuperUser question. It has nothing to do with computers. – CarlF Nov 6 at 5:34
Avoid asking questions that are subjective, argumentative, or require extended discussion. This is not a discussion board, this is a place for questions that can be answered! Nothing to see here. Move along now. – Diago Nov 6 at 5:38

This has alot to do with computers, this applies to both software and hardware players. Also, this is not subjective, this question can definitely be answered. I'm not asking people to judge picture quality, I'm asking what may influence picture quality. How is that subjective? – henle Nov 6 at 15:17
I disagree. Nowhere do you specify your referring to a Computer blu-ray player or the software used to play Blu-ray. The question to me seems completely related to physically Blu-ray players. I agree with the original flags received regarding this not being computer related. – Diago Nov 28 at 7:27

Questions on Super User are expected to generally relate to computer software or computer hardware in some way. This question is very far afield from software or hardware.

AVSForum discussion: Do we really need a format beyond DVD9 for HD?

Update: It would be useful to understand the format differences from the technology on the ladder-rung under it to help appreciate what the players might be playing.

How does this have anything to do with my question? – henle Nov 5 at 19:30
I'm sorry, but could you explain what you mean by your update? I find it difficult to understand what you are referring to with "what the players might be playing". – henle Nov 6 at 15:20
