There are many interesting blogs that you want to keep track of, and most of them support RSS. So instead of bookmarking those blogs and remember to visit them everyday, a better alternative would be to use a RSS feed tool.

I would prefer a web based feeder for portability. I've tried Google Reader and found it great. Are there other alternatives that may provide better functionality than that?

Like you said, Google Reader. I would say that is still going to be you top bet.

For someone who is constantly browsing the web, I also find the iGoogle homepage very effective at keeping track of a number of RSS feeds (you can only view a limited amount at a time, so it is definitely for more active users).

I have also been a fan in the past of using Thunderbird for my RSS feeds, but that hasn't been the case for a long time.

Seconded. On Windows, I swore by FeedDemon, and so tried the Newsgator synchronisation services, but they pale into insignificance compared to Google Reader. All my feeds, on all my devices, all the time. Perfect. – moobaa Jul 17 at 3:52
At first I was not a big fan of Google Reader (was a big fan of my iGoogle page), but once certain items started getting blocked by my work filter, I found Google Reader incredibly helpful in it's full display of the text of much of my RSS feeds (this isn't exactly a GR feature, but it was integral in me starting to use it more and more) – TheTXI Jul 17 at 3:54
And you really can't beat the keyboard shortcuts once you get the hang of them. – bbrown Jul 18 at 0:00

For Mac OS X, I use NetNewsWire. It works well, lets me synchronize between two computers, has Growl support, and so on. It also has an iPhone version (which I personally don't use, but I'm sure others like it).

I think my revision of the title may have made this look a bit unfitting. I apologize for that. – TheTXI Jul 17 at 3:51
Whoops, didn't see the "prefer web based" part of the description. Sorry. – jtbandes Jul 17 at 3:55
I just left a recommendation for how to integrate Google Reader with the iPhone and Mac OS X in a very powerful way: superuser.com/questions/7615/… – bbrown Jul 17 at 23:59

I used Bloglines for years but the increasing amount of advertisement drove me to Google Reader.

the advertisement isn't on the beta interface yet beta.bloglines.com – Sam Hasler Jul 17 at 11:17

I was a fan of desktop clients for years, however I found that Google reader is much better as I can assess my feeds from any PC or my iPhone.

The newsgator readers are very good, which includes Newsgator on the PC and Net News Wire on the mac.

EDIT: With the new title, I would say that Google reader will be hard to beat.

If you use Google Reader and Firefox, take a look at Feedly. It's a Firefox extension that seamlessly integrates with Google Reader and provides a really nice magazine-like interface among other UI niceties.

It's clean, fast and a really innovative new spin on the now quite tired RSS reader paradigm. Highly recommended.

If you can install software on your own server then Shaun Inman's Fever may be for you. Think of it as a cross between a feed reader and a personalised Digg.
