I have a Panasonic TC-P42G15 Plasma HDTV, which is hooked up to a Windows 7 PC via HDMI cable. This works just fine as long as the PC is set up to 1080p resolution. The problem is I want to play various computer games on this system, and some of them display at a different resolution. When this happens, the TV only shows a black screen. This is a major problem because even though most games will let you adjust the resolution, I can never see the configuration screen the first time it runs! I need to keep a separate small monitor nearby just to change video settings!

For full disclosure, the PC actually has a DVI output which is then adapted to HDMI via this adapter box: http://www.monoprice.com/Product?c_id=101&cp_id=10114&cs_id=1011405&p_id=8124&seq=1&format=2 (not sure if that matters).

Getting a new TV is out of the question, but is there something I can do in Windows (to force it to ALWAYS output 1080p), or via some kind of hardware, to always upscale random resolutions to proper 1080p so that the TV will display it?

I'm surprise I haven't seen much about this online as I know there are a lot of PC gamers playing on HDTV's.

not quite answering your question, but if you do know the resolution of the games, set windows to that resolution first before you run the game. you may need to reboot PC for the TV to detect output, but should work. –  Mark Nov 18 '13 at 23:58
