Super User is a question and answer site for computer enthusiasts and power users. It's 100% free, no registration required.

I was trying to transfer some files from my Windows 8 machine to Mac OS X via FTP (don't ask why everything else failed, but it did - in every piece of software for file transfer computers don't see each other via WLAN).

Since in Mavericks there is no GUI way of switching FTP on, I used this:

sudo -s launchctl load -w /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/ftp.plist

I used FileZilla to upload files in 'Auto' mode (and it 'automatically' chose binary mode then AFAIU).

Connection and transfer works, but... All the Russian filenames have become broken and unreadable. Is it because Windows-1251 Cyrillic filenames aren't supported on Macintosh? (then the question is - doesn't FileZilla re-encode file names in UTF-8 on uploading?..)

And the real question is - what can I do? All of my USB flash sticks cannot carry such an amount of information to transfer, I'm really looking for a somewhat simpler way; FTP seemed an option, but can I really fix the filenames?

Maybe OSX FTP server requires some additional configuration which I am not aware of?
