Background

I'm now forced to use open source proprietary driver (radeon kernel module) since after the last upgrade I got Xorg version 7.7 and fglrx just doesn't support it.

For what concerns the normal desktop usage this driver works fine, even better than fglrx, I even have high resolution frame buffer consoles! ^_^

Issue

But when actual OpenGL capabilities are used i.e. video games or even movie playing with VLC, screen freezes in a while and a number of red or blue pixels appear. Now, if I'm lucky this lasts for some seconds then the monitor loses the signal and suddenly everything restores; if I'm not, I have to reboot...

  • @cYrus, I will check it as soon as I get my Radeon card back from service. It turned out to be faulty anyways, so it may be possible that it caused the problems. Aug 16, 2014 at 7:39

I finally found a solution in this forum thread.

In short, there's a boot parameter to set (radeon.dpm), so I fixed by editing /etc/default/grub to something like:

GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet radeon.dpm=1"

Then sudo update-grub and reboot.
