Super User is a question and answer site for computer enthusiasts and power users. It's 100% free, no registration required.

I'm fairly new to Linux/Ubuntu. I have just installed a Ubuntu 13.10 LAMP server as a server for developing themes for CMS systems, but I can't get the user rights correct.

The server is working perfectly and serving web pages with name based virtual hosts (apache), so the server is correct set up. My trouble comes when users upload files to their own www directory. When the files arrive at the server the user permission does not allow apache server to access them. We have to manually add the user right on these files for it to work.

Path for virtual host; /home/www.testsite.com/www
The user uploading the files: developer:developer

How do I set up the permissions for this to work without having to manually correct the permissions?
