You can't make computer faster physically. Regular maintenance will help in making computer feel faster.

  • CCleaner - clean up junk files that you don't need. Cleans registry also. (http://www.ccleaner.com/)
  • autoruns.exe - find out what processes/programs are running at startup. remove entries that you don't need.
  • defraggler - defragment your system periodically. Ideally once a month or less. Schedule it so you don't forget to do this. (http://www.piriform.com/defraggler)
  • Revo Unistaller - remove unwanted programs from your computer. All programs will leave some files and/or registry entires which you don't need. When you uninstall any program using Revo, it will detect and delete not required files and registry entries. (http://www.revouninstaller.com/)

I think you can download all of above from http://ninite.com/ in one installer. All of these programs are free.

Hope this helps.

Sure you can. You could use, for example, EasyTune, to overclock your computer. This will make it faster physically. – ChrisInEdmonton Nov 12 at 16:17

improving performance depends a lot on (a) what you want your computer to do quickly and (b) what your computer is currently doing with it's available resources.

There are, unfortunately, no easy cure-alls for this.

That said, the easiest and first thing to try for the non-technical is usually defragging the harddisk. You can do this using the tool shipped with your operating system. For Windows XP, this would be found in your Start Menu here:

Programs > Accessories > System Tools > Disk Defragmenter

The second thing you can do is ensure that computer is free of viruses and spyware. To do this, first of all, you should update your operating system. Assuming you are using a version of Microsoft Windows, go here to update:

If you already have a anti-virus / anti-spyware product, make sure it is up-to-date. If you don't, download the free Microsoft Security Essentials.

There is no software per se that makes your computer work faster.

If you are not satisfied with the performance your hardware gives you, you could

  • downgrade the OS to an older version that does not use as much resources
  • use another, less resource-consumpting OS
  • defragment your hard-drive or better,
  • use a SSD instead of a conventional hard-drive
  • remove clutter, i.e. unnecessary software
  • stop services / demons you don't need
  • don't use many programs in background

...

Something like EasyTune will overclock your computer, making it physically faster. There are other programs that will also overclock your computer or your GPU. Obviously, this comes at a risk.

As others have mentioned, removing unnecessary software, defragmenting your hard drive, etc. may also help, though probably don't fit the definition of making your computer faster physically.

There is no way that software will make your computer faster. Yes, there a lots of people and companies that will try to tell you something else, but these are either deluded or lying.
