I have a preview build of Windows 8.1 from the MS Dreamspark website, (free software for students) and it is now asking me to upgrade.

I have also installed the Windows 8.1 Pro full version from the same store onto my laptop. Can I use this product key from the laptop install on my desktop? I'm not sure how many devices it allows me to install via this product key.

Also what is the best way to transfer over the applications that I currently have on my desktop upon upgrade? I have a large 1TB external drive that I can copy across files, but I was wondering if there is a useful utility for this.

I know this may be a duplicate, but I can't find anything with regard to the Dreamspark license.

What you want is not possible there is no upgrade path from the Windows 8.1 Preview. Any update to the final version will require you to reinstall all applications only your personal data will be transferred. A license key can only be used on a single computer. – Ramhound Jan 3 '14 at 2:21
