I use vagrant to create a virtual machine on my local system. I'm testing out a large database migration that's altering hundreds of thousands of rows. The migration script has been run to keep memory usage down (PHP will kill it at 4MB).

As this script runs and start moving our largest table (215,000 records, 100 records at a time) - the .vmdk file for the virtual machine starts expanding at a pace of about 1GB per minute until the local hard drive is full (and ultimately crashes the host) or until the script is stopped.

However, running du -sch * from / as root produces a grand total of 3.0GB. I can't find any expanding files on the virtual machine itself.

What other locations can I look in to find what is expanding the virtual machine file?
