A few weeks ago I came across a utility which listed good quality free/open source software and made it easy to install - stuff like Firefox, Open Office, GIMP etc....
...and now I can't find it. Clues gratefully received!

Do you mean Ninite? They have changed their name recently. Install multiple apps at once without toolbars or clicking Next.

This obviously isn't the one you were looking for, but you might also want to get a Dropbox account and install PortableApps on it. ;) |

If you're handy with PowerShell: http://chocolatey.org/ - it's a NuGet app fetcher that looks promising. If you're even handier with PowerShell try http://boxstarter.codeplex.com/ I just set up a few Virtual Machines using NiNite to install what it could get (soooo easy) and AllMyApps to do the rest. AllMyApps is nearly there but a lot of the versions it instaleld were one behind the latest release. So I just made a couple of checklists in http://Trello.com with the download links of what I want. Every tiem I had a new install to do I copied the checklists and worked through them. My Recommendation: NiNite + the Trello list. Also handy if you already have the files locally if you're setting up a few at a time. If I was better at PowerShell I'd use Chocolatey. I probably will sooner or later - it is gathering momentum quite quickly. |
