On my workstation I have a single disk (/dev/sda) with 4 partitions. One of the partitions has free space that I set aside while installing Ubuntu (/dev/sda6). I wanted to use this free space to create logical volumes using LVM. I ran fdisk /dev/sda6 and chose LVM (code : 8e) for the filesystem type. When complete, I tried to use pvcreate on /dev/sda6, but I got this message:

"Can't open /dev/sda6 exclusively. Mounted filesystem?"

Can anyone tell me what I'm doing wrong and how to correct it?

Try rebooting your system maybe? If you run lsof -n | grep sda6 is there anything using the device? –  Zoredache Jan 6 at 20:11
