I have a project that I would like to write up in the form of wiki pages. I want it to be both hosted and free. So far I have found wikispaces.com which seems Ok, but are there any others that I should consider?

EDIT: I have more than one project in mind, so I can not specify exactly what features I need, suffice it to say that I would like it configurable as to who can edit/view/comment etc.

EDIT: Just noticed that to get proper control of permissions (edit/view/comment etc) wikispaces.com you have to pay $20 per month :-(

Seriously, do you know what a wiki is? en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wiki – Moayad Mardini Nov 13 '09 at 18:56
I don't see how WP lets you host a wiki! – Moayad Mardini Nov 13 '09 at 18:57

Haha Really sorry, added link now – thegreyspot Nov 13 '09 at 19:14
Looks potentially excellent. But I'm a bit concerned, firstly because I can't find anything telling me about memory restrictions and also because the site has an alexa rank of only 440,000 which seems remarkably low for this kind of site. I guess its very new. – Mick Nov 13 '09 at 23:51
Moayad, please note that OP said "other apps" when referring to WordPress. Dreamhostapps does provide free hosting for MediaWiki. – briealeida Nov 14 '09 at 6:01

Please check out the WikiMatrix http://www.wikimatrix.org/ . If you use the "choice wizard" to select a wiki "hosted by someone else" and "with history", it (currently) gives you 28 choices, most of them free. The "compare them" link at the end of the choice wizard lets see which ones have which features -- nearly all of them have the "ACL" and "page permissions" features you are looking for. If you know any other wiki hosts that WikiMatrix doesn't yet know about, please inform the nice people at WikiMatrix.

ACL? Looks like a great site - thanks. – Mick Nov 17 '09 at 10:08

You don't mention whether this will be public for all or accessible by just you or a few. That will play into what would be the right service.

PBWorks (formerly PBWiki) and Wikia are two that immediately spring to mind to investigate further.

There are also some specialist wikis out there for specific types of projects. Obsidian Portal, for instance, is geared to tabletop roleplaying games.

PB works appears not to be free :-( – Mick Nov 13 '09 at 18:29
Hmmm...used to be. I haven't looked in a long time. – Al Everett Nov 13 '09 at 20:48

I personally use Wikidot, it has free and paid options. The free is limited in the amount of space you can use, and it has ads/a wikidot toolbar, but they need to support themselves somehow.
