How do I configure Postbox (or Thunderbird, on which it is based) to perform server-side searches over IMAP?

I have > 30000 emails on my Gmail account, and the search function of Postbox doesn't find them - but it suggests to index all folders, which involves downloading every message. I know the IMAP protocol supports a SEARCH feature, and especially the Gmail servers are documented to support this feature, including custom Gmail search operators.

If it is not supported, is there any workaround that doesn't involve downloading all mails (and I shouldn't have to say this, doesn't involve using Gmail in the browser ;-))? For example extentions, etc..
