Youtube videos in VLC are playing sound only in my left ear. http://www.videolan.org/doc/play-howto/en/ch04.html says that vlc --mono is a valid command. But when I run the daily stable VLC from the ppa (or Ubuntu 12.04's default vlc) I get

$ VLC media player 2.0.10 Twoflower (revision 2.0.8+git20140211+r49186+4+5~ubuntu12.04.1) vlc: unknown option or missing mandatory argument `--mono' Try `vlc --help' for more information. ^C [1]+ Done vlc --mono http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R3hDVwGbZ0E

. man vlc on my machine makes no mention of mono. vlc --help | grep mono finds nothing either.

How do I get the sound to play equally in both ears?
