Driver download pages

What's a good website to look for drivers?

All my Google searches seem to lead me to either very commercial websites (trying to sell you a software to do it all), shady sites (downloading some free utility), or not up to date (The latest Windows XP drivers!).

Isn't there a legit, community-driven site to download drivers out there?

Unless you have a really specific need for a 3rd-party, customized driver, I don't see any reason to download drivers from anyone except the original manufacturer. You're right. Most of those driver-search sites are really seedy and very likely malicious.

If the original manufacturer is out of business or no longer offers the driver, do a search for the device and make sure lots of people recommend the same file from a reputable site.

And it might be worth scanning any dubious files with a service like virusscan.jotti.org, which tells you what multiple AVs think of the file. – Cameron Nov 19 at 5:24
