I've created some labels in my Gmail account with various names. I want to set it up so that incoming emails are automatically labelled according to the actual email address that they are sent to/from.

How do I go about doing this?

  1. Click Create a filter
(This will be next to the Search the Web button up at the top of the page.)

  2. In the To field, enter the incoming email address as it is delivered to you.
E.g. The email you want to filter against is john.doe@example.com, put this in the "To" field.

    • Alternatively put the email address in the From field if you want to filter by who is sending.
  3. Click Next Step

  4. Select a label as required from Apply the label.
If you would like to add any other actions, such as skipping the inbox or starring, do this here.

  5. Click Create Filter.

Now, when an email sent to (or sent from) john.doe@example.com hits your inbox, it will have the label automatically applied as well as any other actions you may have chosen.
