I have a eight year old daughter who likes to compose DJ-like music with an old Magix Dance-Maker CD I had from the 90s but it doesn't work anymore and the newer trial versions from Magix software give me errors when I try to install them on Windows 7.

Does anyone know of a good music mixer software (free or cost) which would be good for kids to compose MP3s and, at best, would help teach musical theory as well somehow (looking for a good balance between education and entertainment).

You can try eJay series. Dance eJay 7 would be a good choice.

DJ Mix Lite is excellent software that counts the beats per minute and mixes music files.

DJ Mix Lite counts the beats per minute of every music file and adjusts to mix the music, the music mix is automatic and there are certain values that can be configured to make the mix without distortions and with a great quality in the mix. The DJ Mix Lite GUI has no complications, is easy and friendly to use with a great graphic equalizer showing the beats of the music file.

She might like the new game "DJ Hero", which is like Guitar Hero, but with a turntable. It's getting pretty awesome reviews. It's available for xbox 360, Playstation 2 & 3, and Nintendo Wii.
