I tried setting up the combo analog/digital out on this little box with the help of this adapter, but I can't get it to output anything digital...

aplay -l tells me that card 1 device 1 is "ALC269VC Digital", but setting that up in ~.asoundrc

defaults.pcm.card 1
defaults.pcm.device 1
defaults.ctl.card 1

or just trying

aplay -D plughw:1,1 /usr/share/sounds/alsa/Front_Center.wav

doesnt work (without any error code that is)

I'm all out of ideas - even tried setting it up in pavucontrol, but it just tells me the analog output is plugged in and doesnt give me any choice to switch it to digital

edit: okay, finally got it working by setting options snd_hda_intel index=1 in modprobe.conf (switches device 0 from hdmi to analog/digital out) and also deleting ~.asoundrc and directly editing /etc/asound.conf

pcm.snd_card {
    type hw
    card 0
    device 1
}

ctl.snd_card {
    type hw
    card 0
    device 1
}

Try spdif:1 instead of plughw:1,1. –  CL. Mar 26 at 8:45

@CL. well, atleast spdif:1 gives me some error codes: ALSA lib confmisc.c:1286:(snd_func_refer) Unable to find definition 'cards.HDA-intel.pcm.iec958.1:CARD=1,AES0=4,AES1=130,AES2=0,AES3=2' ALSA lib pcm.c:2239:(snd_pcm_open_noupdate) Unknown PCM spdif:1 –  Spleen Mar 26 at 18:47
