reset / clear the password with the Offline NT Password & Registry Editor.

This works well, just clear the password and change it once in. – KeyboardMonkey Nov 23 at 11:19
I tried Offline NT Password & Registry Editor, it did not work on win7 64-bit. – data_jepp Nov 29 at 0:28
well, i haven't tried with with Windows 7 x64 but i certainly reset the password several times in Vista and indeed Windows Server 2008 x64 (those aren't too different from Windows 7). are you sure you followed the instructions? – Molly Nov 29 at 0:33

Do you have Caps lock on? Maybe your keyboard layout settings changed before your last shutdown. Since you only have a password prompt to test the keys, you can't see their output. This is very vague, you'll need to elaborate a little with some background information.

Vista tells you if you have Caps Lock on below the password field. I assume Windows 7 would do that as well. – ephilip Nov 23 at 2:13

Have you tried to write the password in the username edit? That's the only way you can be certain you're writing what you think you're writing.

At least in vista you can select other user, then you can write both user and password.

I have a small media keyboard, the FN lock was on. So letters became numbers. Found it out by trying the the on screen keyboard.

Happens to the best of us; next time you can take johnny's advice and try typing in a username prompt so you can see what the input looks like. – Nathan Adams Nov 29 at 4:44
