My Laptop clock speed is permanently higher than it should be. I have an Intel i7-3632QM clocked at 2.2GHz, but it is permamently clocking around 3GHz. I was wondering whether this why this might be, and how i might fix it as my PC gets hot even when in light use.

3Can you confirm you didn't overclock it? Also, do you have any overclocking software? Lastly, has this always been the case or only recently (if only recently, did you install any new programs/hardware)– DaveMay 12, 2014 at 8:35

1What's your laptop model? What did you try so far?– and31415May 12, 2014 at 8:36

I haven't knowingly overclocked it. I wouldn't know how. It has pretty much been always like this– ruskindMay 12, 2014 at 8:37

1It sounds like EIST (SpeedStep) is off. This CPU can raise its clock speed up to 3.2GHz if power limitations and heat allow. Check both the BIOS settings and your OS's power management settings.– David SchwartzMay 12, 2014 at 9:19

The CPU isn't overclocked. It can go up to 3.2GHz if power limitations and heat limitations allow. Make sure EIST (SpeedStep) is on in the BIOS and check your OS's power management settings.
