When i still had a mac, i was split between evernote and yojimbo everytime i needed to capture some information, and/or organize research material and such (and that happened A LOT).

Now I'm on linux and can't have either of them (I tried evernote on wine, but it's pretty bad).

I basically need to be able to capture & retrieve :

  • notes

  • to do items

  • documents (pdf & chm)

  • web-clips

I wouldn't mind having to use different tools when capturing, but i really need to be able to non-hierarchically organize this stuff (tags, smart folders and such) from a single interface afterwards.

From the look of it, chandler could do some of this, but i can't get it to install on ubuntu 9.10.

My search for a solid PIM solution has been pretty thorough I think, but so far I came up short of a good solution.

KDE seems to be taking some important steps in that direction though with their Akonadi project, but it still has long way to go...

Evernote works on linux too.

If you are not scared of Emacs you can give Org-mode a try. It's really great: http://orgmode.org/

Evernote looks really wrong in wine, and as of 3.5 it will need .NET, thus won't be wine compatible anymore, so that's not an option. On the other hand, i've heard a lot about org-mode, and I've been thinking about switching from vim to emacs for a while now (org-mode not being the reason though), even if I eventually do, that's not a solution for non-text stuff, I'd really need something more ubiquitous, to manage all sorts of content. – julien Nov 27 at 14:07
Org can link to external files (images, etc.) and they are opened in their own viewer. Not sure what else Evernote can do, but if it's only storing images and stuff and linking to them then you can store them in a directory and link to them from org. There are several capturing solutions for org which make capturing web content automatic, but I don't use them, so I'm not familiar with them. You can ask on the orgmode mailing list how specific features of Evernote can be replicated in Org if you decide giving Org a try. – Joe Nov 27 at 14:20
That's interesting Joe, I didn't know about this. I assume grabbing web content is done by browsing WITH emacs, or do you reckon you could automate that with a browser ? – julien Nov 27 at 23:38
Of course, you don't have to browse with emacs. :) As I said, I haven't used this feature yet, but there are detailed instructions to set it up for Firefox and other browsers: orgmode.org/worg/org-contrib/org-protocol.php – Joe Nov 28 at 15:42
ended up using org mode indeed :) – julien Dec 12 at 16:12

Lately I have found that the Evernote web interface is good enough that I don't bother with the client app anymore.

I would assume you are well aware of the web interface already, and I might not know what I am missing as I am not really an Evernote power user, but - seeing as you are considering Emacs as an option - I am compelled for humanitarian reasons to at least remind you of the web interface. ;)

It's a bit late alrdy, but I'd like to suggest PersonalBrain (Win,Mac,Linux,3 editions, free for personal use). Handles any kind of documents, URLs, URIs, supports tagging and very flexible linking/categorization. Plus a cool (and productive) UI :)

Disclaimer: I'm also a reseller of this in germany, but have been an enthustiastic user before and still am ;)

Also kind of late, but have you looked at TreeLine? It's packaged for at least the Debian & Ubuntu distributions, IIRC. You define the types of information you want to store and organize them hierarchically. It's more or less equivalent to a personal database, but requires much less overhead.

I'm using leo if the computer is running a GUI, hnb otherwise.
