Audacity® is free, open source software for recording and editing sounds

Note: if you want to export your recordings to MP3 you'll need LAME MP3 Encoder.

Can It record anything playing on my PC? – Shail Nov 28 '09 at 10:36
Yes. When you press the Record button, Audacity will capture whatever sound is playing on your computer's speakers. Check this link: audacity.sourceforge.net/help/faq?s=recording&i=streaming – Nifle Nov 28 '09 at 10:58
Is this true? I though you had to use a internal routing application such as jack/soundflower. – Sam Jan 25 '10 at 15:25
You may need additional software in Win7, but in older versions of Win, selecting Wave Out/Stereo Mix as your sound source should allow recording of whatever is playing. NB may be disabled in some drivers even on older Win, so worth trying updated/alternative audio drivers if the option is missing. – Bonus Jan 25 '10 at 15:49

Use any recording software (such as the aforementioned audacity) combined with

http://jackaudio.org/download for windows

or

http://cycling74.com/products/soundflower/ for os x
