Super User is a question and answer site for computer enthusiasts and power users. It's 100% free, no registration required.

I recently experienced a major blue screen crash on my Windows 8.1 computer. When I restarted, the start screen would not render. All I can see is the "Start" label at the top, the icons at the upper right (name, power, search), and the arrow for the apps screen at the bottom. Opening the apps screen also does not display any apps, just the title, etc. Also, I can't start any Metro-style apps, including PC settings. I would click on the Settings Charm, followed by "Change PC Settings", but nothing ever shows up.

Just to make this "disclaimer" beforehand, refresh/reset is not an option. I do not have a product key, and my installation disc is for Windows 8, not 8.1, and is not compatible.

I have also already run the dism /online /cleanup-image /checkhealth + restorehealth commands, and they supposedly worked, but the problem persists (even after restart).

Any ideas on this odd problem?

Thanks! - Adam Krpan -
