PS3 firmware as of now does not offer skype application support ( where as PSP does ).

I have linux installed on PS3 as 'Other OS' - it seems that linux version of Skype does not work here as there are no binaries for Cell (which is what PS3 has) processor or for the PowerPC (what the Cell is based on).

I want to know if there are some Open OS IM client that can work on this platform and it can be extended to support Skype protocol.

Also looking forward to some inputs from users having experience in writing linux applications that work for cell/powerpc platform.

Regards, dc

SuperUser isn't the right place to ask consoles questions. – Moayad Mardini Nov 29 '09 at 14:09
just because there is 'ps3' mentioned in this post does not mean its a console related question. The question is regarding a computing device on which software can run and we are talking about linux here not just any random OS. The question is very much programming related. – dotnetcoder Jan 3 '10 at 19:07

No.

If the official Skype client doesn't work, you're dead in the water. The protocol is completely closed, and difficult to reverse-engineer. Alternate clients on Windows simply pass commands through to the official client. One day, perhaps the protocol will be public.

edit: Some people have had luck running Skype through Wine, but YMMV.

thanks Phoshi for you reply. Also I just found out , PS3 slim firmware does not have 'Other OS' option at all. (Not a very motivational move) – dotnetcoder Nov 30 '09 at 8:32
