I just purchased a 34 inch "ultra widescreen" monitor. Most reviews recommend using a VESA stand, because the one that comes with the monitor is so terrible. However, the maximum supported width I can find in a consumer desk stand is 30 inches. I've never used a 3rd party mount. What difference does that make as long as the monitor is under the max weight?

it'll probably work, but will put additional torque on the mountings. the width of the monitor will act like a leaver, and alter the way the weight is distributed to the mounting, making it effectively weigh more at the connection points. –  Frank Thomas Jul 2 '14 at 19:28
