I have a spreadsheet tracking multiple dates for about 150 people. I am having a problem however getting dates in Col I to highlight if they are going to be past the date in Col P.

I want Col I Row 4 & 5 to highlight. How do I write/do this? Everything I have tried so far has failed.

Col I Col P

"Everything I have tried so far has failed." – then, show what you tried and didn't work out. – Jens Erat Jul 12 '14 at 8:47

Use Conditional Formatting. Follow these steps:

  1. Highlight Col I.
  2. Go to Conditional Formatting > New Rule > Use a formula to determine which cells to format.
  3. Enter this formula:

To make this happen first select the column that you want formatted.

Then go to HOME > Conditional Formatting > New Rule

Select the Use a formula to determine which cells to format.

Enter the formula such as =$C1>$D1 $C1 is the first cell is the first column and $D1 is the second column. If the date in column C is grater than the date in column D then this is true. Note that the format is $C1 not $C$1.

Now press the Format button and set the formatting you want such as BOLD and color RED. Press OK Press OK

If you need to change or edit the rule go to Conditional formatting Manage Rules.

Hope this helps.
