Looking for a home office (SOHO) market (priced) network hard drive (NAS) that will sync some or all of its content to a cloud-based backup service (preferably stored to Amazon S3 for reliability/redundancy...)

The only option I've been able to find so far is NetGear's ReadyNAS Vault however from what I've read it's not as secure as it could be, and the service is quite expensive ($200/yr for 50GB of cloud storage) - it's 'powered' by ElephantDrive

Ideally would love to see something like Wuala integrated into a Lacie Network HDD - conveniently, I suspect this is in the works as Lacie recently acquired Wuala, however nothing has come of it yet.

I know there are options to use rsync with a customizable NAS (such as the very versatile and hackable D-Link DNS-323, but the easier this is to setup and maintain, the better.

egnyte.com/corp/local-cloud-NAS.html is getting closer, but it's pricey and overly complex. Really just want a network HDD that lets you select which files/folders you want to sync to the cloud – Josh Newman Dec 8 '09 at 16:09

Try Synology DiskStation

Thanks - this is definitely a step in the right direction with the option of backing up to Amazon S3: synology.com/us/products/features/backup_server.php#amazon – Josh Newman May 27 '10 at 13:57

The ReadyNAS Duo is quite effective and supports all sort of protocols, including RSYNC and NFS, so you should be able to find some compatible cloud storage. Also, you can buy two of those, set them in different places, and tell them to sync.

It also features a nice backup scheduler.

I'm not sure this will be what you're looking for, but check out www.nomadesk.com. I love it - it's encrypted, it shows up as a local drive on my computer, and the documents I save can be accessed from any computer with an internet connection.

If your looking for a more networked solution, check out tonidoplug.com You can easily map the network drive to appear as a local drive on a computer. You basically create a networked "cloud" at home! If you need a super safe drive to store things at home, check out IoSafe external hard drives. They are fireproof, waterproof, and you can secure them via a lock and cable.

Thanks very much. Nomadesk.com looks interesting - kind of like a souped-up, unlimited version of Dropbox. Tonidoplug.com is cool as well - great price. The real problem I want to solve here is having the speed and accessibility of a local NAS/storage device, but the redundancy, reliability & accessibility of cloud based storage. I'm sure an affordable version of this sort of thing is in the works from the plethora of online storage & NAS/HDD providers - something tells me Lacie/Wuala.com may be working on this... Thanks very much for your suggestions! – Josh Newman Mar 19 '10 at 14:20

I don't know if this realy is the answear, but I would prefer to use iSCSI SAN solution, instead of NAS. I think StarWind will be good for your needs

Thanks, but way too pricey/complex. Looking for something that plugs and plays, with a nice web interface - not for me, but for someone that will have to 'manage' it themselves... – Josh Newman Dec 4 '09 at 19:10
It will. You can try trial. Just take a look at the site. – ToreTrygg Dec 4 '09 at 19:58
Ideally want something that resides on the NAS / network HDD itself, not requiring a computer to handle the syncing – Josh Newman Dec 8 '09 at 16:08
Why would he want to present the storage as iSCSI? Presumably, if he is asking for a NAS, he needs to share the storage between multiple computers. This isn't possible with a single iSCSI LUN. – MDMarra May 26 '10 at 22:12

ReadyNas by netgear works directly with egnyte's cloud service

Saw that and commented above - still quite pricey ($15/month for 20gb of storage). Thanks – Josh Newman May 27 '10 at 13:57

Looks like D-Link has partnered with CTERA to provide cloud backup in the latest beta firmware (1.09) for the DNS-323. According to this D-Link support forum thread, the service is presently being tested in BETA with a 30 day free trial (likely will extend past 30 days or until the BETA period is over) with a 50GB total storage limit.

I suspect this will still be pricey in the end, as CTERA's standalone pricing is:

  • 10GB for $9.95/month
  • 25GB for $19.95/month
  • 50GB for $29.95/month
  • 100GB for $49.95/month
  • 200GB for $99.95/month

Going the Synology + Amazon S3 route will likely still be cheaper ($10/month for 100gb of storage excluding data transfer costs)

It's out of beta now and priced at $99/yr/50GB , $199/yr/100gb or $4.99/mo/5gb + $0.50/mo/per extra gig and for some reason it's limited to North America only. – Josh Newman Jul 14 '10 at 3:41

Another option has surfaced - QNAP now supports both ElephantDrive and Amazon S3 (!!!) backups on their awesome lineup of NAS devices
