This is on a fresh copy of Ubuntu. I tried to implement all of the solutions that I can find online but to no avail. Any ideas as to what is going on? This is the error message that I get:

Access forbidden!

You don't have permission to access the requested directory. There is either no index document or the directory is read-protected.

If you think this is a server error, please contact the webmaster.

Here is my permission file:

Alias /bitnami/ "/home/avi/Dropbox/Field Team Tracker" Alias /bitnami "/home/avi/Dropbox/Field Team Tracker"

Options Indexes +FollowSymLinks Includes ExecCGI AllowOverride All Order allow, deny Allow from all

Here is my httpd.conf file:

#
# This is the main Apache HTTP server configuration file. It contains the
# configuration directives that give the server its instructions.
# See <URL:http://httpd.apache.org/docs/trunk/> for detailed information.
# In particular, see
# <URL:http://httpd.apache.org/docs/trunk/mod/directives.html>
# for a discussion of each configuration directive.
#
# Do NOT simply read the instructions in here without understanding
# what they do. They're here only as hints or reminders. If you are unsure
# consult the online docs. You have been warned.
#
# Configuration and logfile names: If the filenames you specify for many
# of the server's control files begin with "/" (or "drive:/" for Win32), the
# server will use that explicit path. If the filenames do *not* begin
# with "/", the value of ServerRoot is prepended -- so 'log/access_log'
# with ServerRoot set to '/www' will be interpreted by the
# server as '/www/log/access_log', where as '/log/access_log' will be
# interpreted as '/log/access_log'.

#
# ServerRoot: The top of the directory tree under which the server's
# configuration, error, and log files are kept.
#
# Do not add a slash at the end of the directory path. If you point
# ServerRoot at a non-local disk, be sure to specify a local disk on the
# Mutex directive, if file-based mutexes are used. If you wish to share the
# same ServerRoot for multiple httpd daemons, you will need to change at
# least PidFile.
#
ServerRoot "/opt/lampp"

#
# Mutex: Allows you to set the mutex mechanism and mutex file directory
# for individual mutexes, or change the global defaults
#
# Uncomment and change the directory if mutexes are file-based and the default
# mutex file directory is not on a local disk or is not appropriate for some
# other reason.
#
# Mutex default:logs

#
# Listen: Allows you to bind Apache to specific IP addresses and/or
# ports, instead of the default. See also the <VirtualHost>
# directive.
#
# Change this to Listen on specific IP addresses as shown below to
# prevent Apache from glomming onto all bound IP addresses.
#
#Listen 12.34.56.78:80
Listen 8888

ErrorLog "logs/error_log" - as per config. This would've been a comment to this answers comment-question .. if I had the 50 reputation needed :-/ Also chmod o+x is not the required - or indeed clever - thing to do. chmod o+r would be for reading, directories, okay +x too.

Since you've put your web content in /home, I'm guessing Apache simply doesn't have permission to access those files. i.e., I usually make Apache a member of the same group as the user who owns the home directory I want to publish, which allows Apache to read the files, but doesn't require them to be world readable. (Adding suexec to the mix allows you to then run applications as the user, so scripts can't poke around in other people's home directories, either.)

There should be more information in the log files (error.log, in particular) about what is wrong. If it's not a simple permissions/ownership problem, we'll need more information in order to help you solve it.

  • I already ran a chmod o+x on both my home directory and the project directory. Do you know where I can find the error file? Aug 9, 2014 at 22:47
  • ok, here is the error message: [core:error] [pid 9780] (13)Permission denied: [client 127.0.0.1:58881] AH00035: access to /favicon.ico denied (filesystem path '/home/avi/Dropbox/Field Team Tracker') because search permissions are missing on a component of the path Aug 10, 2014 at 0:28
  • The error indicates that one of the directories within the path is not readable by Apache. As I mentioned, I prefer to make Apache a member of the group of the user, so you don't have to open up permissions to all users. You'll run into problems later, most likely, if you go that route (suexec will refuse to run things with too-loose permissions, like you now have). This has the pleasant side effect that you probably don't need to micromanage permissions, since the umask will probably get it right for you by default.
