What's the best solution for adding microphone ability (for use with the voice memo app for example) to iPod Touch 2nd generation, mainly for the purpose of using applications in the app store - not professional field recording.

As most people, I have a headphone already so looking for something portable and able to integrate in the current setup.

Griffin's SmartTalk seems to fit the bill. You can plug any pair of headphones into it.

Alternatively, the SwitchEasy ThumbTack seems to have good reviews, but you cannot use it with headphones at the same time.

Thanks I'm reading about some durability issues with the SmartTalk but it seems to be exactly what I was looking for. – svandragt Jul 17 '09 at 9:44
Odd you are you not allowed to post a link for ThumbTack. Is it OK if I do? switcheasy.com/products/ThumbTacks/ThumbTacks.php – Jim McKeeth Jul 26 '09 at 7:23
It was because when I replied initially, I had very little rep. Thanks for reminding me, I'll add the link now. – MJeffryes Jul 26 '09 at 19:57

The Apple In-Ear headphones, apart from being a decent set of headphones, have a built in mic and controls, and was built specifically for what you are asking for

The iPod Touch 2nd gen and later will accept those 3.5mm plugs that have the headphone and microphone all rolled into one.

Either buy a set of headphones which include an in-line mic (such as those used for hands free calling) or buy a microphone made especially for iPods from the Apple Store or other reputable Apple retailer.

I just bought a Blue Mikey for my iPhone - it's a great little piece of hardware.
