I am interested in experimenting with the IBM z/OS mainframe operating system. I am wondering if anyone knows of places on the 'net which offer a free remote account(even time-limited).

The University of Leipzig has z900 running. If you ask nicely maybe they will give you a login. Contact email is on this page (in German), the last two links (Herrn Dr. Herrmann, Prof. Spruth).

I tried looking for one too prior to my course and found nothing. The one I have now is provided for me only because I was enrolled in the course and needed it to learn, I am responsible for all actions on the account (sorry, no lending!). What you can do though if you want z/OS experience, is try a z/OS emulator such as Hercules.

my impression of Hercules is that it is quite a few years out of date in which IBM OS's it supports....T? F? – Paul Nathan Dec 9 '09 at 17:18
It's not out of date and it's still updated. If you want z/OS experience, chances are you'll start off with the basics. From the initial 2000 release to now, the basics haven't really changed anyway. – John T Dec 9 '09 at 17:54
