Ok, so I've got this Dell XPS machine with a P4 3.4Ghz, 2GB RAM and a GeForce 6800 running Windows XP Media Center.

The problem is that windows are drawing very slowly. They don't snap up or snap closed, I can see them drawing. If I grab a window and move it around the screen, it leaves a white ghost trail behind it (that eventually disappears as everything is redrawn). I notice the CPU shoots to 100% when I do this.

I've installed the latest Geforce drivers. I've also disabled hardware acceleration, and then re-enabled it (rebooting after each operation).

What's the next thing I should check?

UPDATE: I found that this problem only occurs when desktop icons are hidden. When icons are not hidden, everything is snappy. The desktop background is set to a photograph if it matters.

If it's at 100% CPU, what process is using the CPU? Have you checked? – AdminAlive Dec 10 '09 at 18:41

did you check the device manager, whether the driver is properly installed? is the Geforce listed as Display adapter or is it a 'Standard VGA Adapter'? – Molly7244 Dec 10 '09 at 18:45
The CPU shoots to 100% when I move a window around. The Geforce is listed as the display adapter. – boden Dec 10 '09 at 19:20
Have you manually disabled the on-board video (if any)? How many video devices do you have? – Doltknuckle Dec 10 '09 at 22:52
