Before when accessing my gmail inbox through firefox as soon as I'd get an email it would show up on my inbox. I did not have to refresh the page. Now I noticed that it isn't doing that anymore. I know because I'm using google talk, which alerts me as soon as I get an email, but when I go to my web browser the new messages don't show on my inbox unless I refresh the page.

Gmail doesn't refresh constantly, but it does do it regularly. It's perfectly normal to receive a new email notification on Google Talk, and it taking up to a minute to appear on Gmail on Firefox, just because Google can "push" the notification to Google Talk, so it appears straight away, while it needs to wait for the Gmail browser client to do its regular, automatic refresh and "pull" the email from the server.

Try giving Gmail in Firefox a minute after seeing the Google Talk notification, and see if the email appears then.

Make sure JavaScript is enabled for Gmail. Maybe you turned it off, or installed an addon that disabled it for certain sites?

Perhaps you switched to basic HTML view? If so, automatic update won't work.
