Super User is a question and answer site for computer enthusiasts and power users. It's 100% free, no registration required.

I really do not like the Windows Live Messenger interface, and every time they revise it, it gets even worse. I want to use a replacement, ...

but I don't want to lose the message history.

My company uses Messenger for discussion of technical problems, and I often need to visit the history to find a previous discussion.

Is there any substitute client that will use/continue the message history? It must also support file transfer.

I'm running Windows XP/Pro, as required by my company.

The message history files are just RTFs, why don't you find the best IM client you can and then set up something to index your RTFs so you can find what you want instantly? –  ta.speot.is Apr 17 '10 at 21:34

Miranda IM offers an addon to import WLM history.

File transfer is supported, voice/video chat is not supported.

Some of the protocols supported via plugins include AIM, Bonjour, Fetion, Gadu-Gadu, Inter-Asterisk eXchange, ICQ, IRC, XMPP (& Google Talk), Lotus Sametime, NetSend, MySpace, .NET Messenger Service (a.k.a. MSN/WLM), Tencent QQ, SIP, Skype (requires Skype), Tlen.pl, Xfire and Yahoo! Messenger.

Miranda IM is freeware, a portable version is also available.

Here's a tutorial how to export/save the WLM history, in case you want to keep a backup.

You can also use pidgin that has "Log Reader" plugin which is able to manipulate WLM logs in pidgin. Check this link: http://developer.pidgin.im/ticket/6190
