I'm looking for reliable and free file hosting service to host any kind of files. I used Google Pages before, but they say they are going to move it to Google Sites, which doesn't let you upload custom content. I'm not going to upload huge files. Really small Silverlight applications to demo this or that functionality...

PS: Hope this is right place to ask this kind of questions here.

this is more of a superuser.com question... I've voting to moving it there. – l0c0b0x Dec 15 '09 at 22:22

Try Dropbox. It's not for "web" hosting, but if you're looking for free file storage with public access, I'd say it's a pretty good way to go. Plus, it's a heckuva app for what it's really useful for, which is file sharing across multiple people's comps.

Reliable, or free.. Choose one. You might find that by using free services for commercial purposes that you're breaking their ToS. There was a time when Gmail Drive Shell was against Google's TOS. And you might also find that it's not reliable, and not fast.

My advice is to use Amazon's S3 storage cloud. The prices aren't free, but they're pretty damn cheap. You also get pretty quick access from anywhere in the world, and so on.

Yeah, S3 is super reliable and fast, none of those crap ads or forcing users to wait. For low volume usage like your blog, you'll probably pay a few cents a month. Eg if you upload a good sized 5MB silverlight application and it gets downloaded 1000 times in a month, I think you'll pay about $0.85 if my calculations are correct. – davr Dec 16 '09 at 17:06

If you have a Windows Live account, you can try Windows Live Sky Drive. Other popular filehosting websites include zShare, MediaFire & 4shared

Do note:

zShare:

How long will my files be hosted on zSHARE? There is no time limit, but files not downloaded for more than 60 days are automatically deleted in order to keep our hard drives clean.

4shared:

How long are my files stored for?

Your Free account and all your files will be removed from 4shared only if you do not log into the account for 30 days.

Mediafire is pretty good. It's free, and they, afaik, keep files forever. However, there's a 100mb limit, but that doesn't seem to bother you. – Sirupsen Dec 16 '09 at 13:55

Depending on where your blog is hosted, you may be able to upload files directly. This is part of both Blogger and Wordpress.com, for instance.

The following chart contains Online storage and price comparison.
Most services have a basic plan which is free (and limited).

I would say that the easiest (and largest and cheapest) is probably Gmail, together with GMail Drive shell extension or the Firefox add-on Gspace. Gmail's Storage is 7.4 GB..

Doesn't your Internet Service Provider offer you any kind of free hosting?

Also, depending on your content, you might be able to find some community willing to host it.
