So I installed Tomato 1.27 on my WRT54GL v1.1 to try and get the most out of it. What can I do optimize my DL and UL speeds? If I wanna run a web service, how do I go about setting up dynamic DNS? What are some cool things I can do with Tomato? Is there a good tutorial or resource for a noob like me?

Router firmwares give you more stability and functionality. At times it can give you slightly improved performance such as with signal boosting or QoS, but rarely if ever do they increase total throughput. That's usually dependent upon the hardware only. – hyperslug Dec 16 '09 at 4:39

This seems to be some good info. After a bit of googling, I found that this QoS tutorial is much better for a noob like me: wi-fiplanet.com/tutorials/article.php/3800416 – Armitage Dec 16 '09 at 20:04
Does boosting the router signal actually improve range? The computer's signal would have to be boosted, too, no? – endolith Jan 16 '10 at 23:42

I suppose if you boosted it enough it could be weaponized, but we're talking more power than you should be using without thinking "My router is now using more power than a space shuttle - I should stop" – Phoshi Jan 17 '10 at 0:06

to see a significant impact you'd have to quadruple the output power (on both sides) ... you get much better results with decent antennae. – Molly7244 Jan 17 '10 at 0:39

I use mine for:

  • Dynamic DNS so I can log in remotely
    • and tunnel connections securely through SSH
  • Change the channel to avoid nearby interference
  • Boost the power a little
  • Port forwarding, UPnP
  • QoS (though I'm not sure if it actually does much)

Otherwise I just use Tomato because DD-WRT didn't work reliably. I wish it had the ability to set up virtual access points. I'd set up an encrypted one for myself with access to the LAN, and an open one for neighbors and travelers to access the internet only. But it doesn't.

Go into the wikibooks entry for full details.

Things I've done:

  • boosted wireless power
  • assigned Google DNS nameservers for use across all computers within the network
  • configured WDS to connect two Tomato routers onto the same network
