Check out LanguageTool, it's free & open source and can even be integrated into OpenOffice.

SpellCheckPlus is a grammar checker that finds common spelling errors and grammatical mistakes in English. Simply type (or paste) your text into the window below and hit the "check text" button.

I recommend After the Deadline.
It's got a clean interface and integrates into

  • bbPress
  • Chrome
  • Firefox
  • Intense Debate
  • Openoffice.org
  • WordPress

and there's also a bookmarklet. There's an online version that you can test without installation.
The feature I like the most about this is Explain..., wich displays an explanation of the error and definitions of both the erroneous and the correct version. All features can be switched on and off from the settings page.

There's support for a few other languages, but it doesn't seem to work that well for those.
