Kdenlive is a powerful and easy to use video editor for Linux. I've found that it read and wrote HD video without problems (the only problem was my machine really ;)).

Cinelerra is capable of editing high definition video.

Cinelerra is a professional non-linear video editing system. It is designed for the GNU/Linux operating system. It is produced by Heroine Virtual, and is free software distributed under the GNU General Public License. Cinelerra also includes a video compositing engine, allowing the user to perform common compositing operations such as keying and mattes.

and as with most advanced video editing software, it requires a bit of horse power ;)
