I have a few monitors and wanted to know the best hardware that I could use to split my screen across 2, 3 or 4 monitors with a standard video card.

Matrox have a range of products called Graphics eXpansion Modules. These are simple splitter boxes that let you connect 2 or 3 monitor to a standard VGA or DVI output. The graphics card sees the splitter as one very wide monitor. However it seems that some graphics cards don't support the required output resolution. There are also some USB 2.0 to VGA adapters. One of my colleague has a few of these [don't know the exact model] connected to his laptop and has no problems with them. Still the ideal solution would be to get enough display outputs on the back of your PC. Some graphics cards such as this one have four connectors. You could also connect 4 monitors by using two dual monitor cards. With some dual card setups it seems you can't combining graphics performance (SLI, Cross Fire) and double the number of port at the same time. Edit: Regarding Steve Rowe's answer about the OS recognizing the bound of each monitor connected to an expander, the drivers apparently provide that functionality but I don't know if it works very well. | ||||

Most video cards will support two video cards. If you want to do 3 or 4, you either need a special video card or a pair of video cards. There is no hardware (at least consumer-level hardware) that will take the signal from a single monitor and split it across multiple monitors. You really wouldn't want to. It is better if the OS knows how your monitors are laid out so it can help. Otherwise you might have words split across the monitors and that would be difficult to use. | |||
