How can I install MSDos 6.22 in Windows XP? Is it possible?

link|improve this question
You probably need to install it in a virual machine. – o.k.w Dec 22 '09 at 6:13
... or you take DOSBox (www.dosbox.com) – Etan Dec 22 '09 at 6:14

Nope. You can't really do it, not because MS DOS is old or anything, but because it is an operating system, and you can't really install on OS within an OS. However, you might want to state what do you need it specifically, maybe we can suggest an alternative (as some already have -> emulators or virtualization machine).

I use MS DOS (still) relatively often, but even so, I must admit it is beggining to be an annoyance running it on modern hardware.

On the other hand, if you're not specifically tied to MS's version of DOS, some other alternatives are much less painful - for example; FreeDOS or DR-DOS (links to wiki). But, they also, can't be installed "within" WinXP.

Depending on your needs, DosBox or a system virtualization system like VMware might work for you.

Not directly. Your best bet is to install a virtual machine and install DOS-6.22 there.

Both XP and DOS-6.22 will try to install themselves as your operating system. They can't both be.

As far as I can see, installing MS-DOS 6.22 on top of the Windows XP shell is impossible.

You could set up a virtual machine and install MS-DOS in there. That should be possible without any problems.

See e.g. the free Windows Virtual Machine

A VM (in VirtualBox, VMWare, VirtualPC) is your only real option for using it. One reason you can't use it natively is the limitations on disk sizes - MS-DOS 6.22 cannot read FAT32 or NTFS volumes, so you couldn't use it with a hard disk bigger than 2GB which is somewhat smaller than what XP needs to install in the first place.
