I'm wondering if it's possible to download subtitles for the TED talks for offline viewing.

Think you need to check with TED for that. The talks are available in many languages, but that's as part of the flash experience, so I can't see how to extract the subtitles. Nice idea though. – outsideblasts Dec 23 '09 at 8:50
See It lets you download a TED talk to an mkv file with all the subtitles/metadata embedded in it. – Mansour Dec 16 '12 at 5:19

This is not an answer just a hint . I have found the URL which loads the related file like this , and its in JSON format.

It's but thanks very much for the tip! I'm going to see how I can convert those to a compatible format now. – Alix Axel Dec 23 '09 at 18:28
Are you saying it's both not a hint nor an answer? – random Dec 24 '09 at 3:07

It does not work for now. – lauhub Apr 3 '14 at 12:57
fixed again! it stopped working because of TED's ui changes – eordano May 2 '14 at 23:29

Just paste this URL:

  • change 33 to the correct topic id
  • change en to the language you require

and you will be able to download a nicely formatted spreadsheet of the subtitles per time stamp.
