We need to replace our 13-15(?) year old LaserJet 4MV. This this has ran like a tank over the years.

Is there anything available today that can compare to this work horse? We need something that can handle high volume, print fast, and never break down or jam (most important). Does not need to be a color, but that would be nice. Anything like this exist today? I assume they just dont make them like they used to.

We tried a Lexmark 500n, lasted about 3 months before we started getting warnings, jams, and pissed off users.

UPDATE: 1 (swapable) Tray would be fine, and legal would be nice, but certainly not required. One thing I forgot to mention, they would like something that does copies. Thanx for all the answers so far!

Does it need to print ledger size (11X17)? Duplex? Number of trays – Dave M Dec 23 '09 at 18:58

Until last year, we were using HP printers in our company. The IT department then decided to change all printers to Xerox WorkCentre. Xerox is known as more economic, faster and can handle high volumes succesfully. The exact model is WorkCentre Pro 265. It's not a color machine, and looks like the following one:

A quick glance at the features:

There are a dozen different models of Workcentre and some are color. They copy and optionally network print, scan-to-folder, scan-to-email, and send/receive fax. The thing I like about leasing a Xerox is that the responsibility for efficiency and reliability fall on Xerox, not you. – kwe Dec 23 '09 at 19:46

I would recommend the HP 4010 series. It's the same general form factor as your 4MV (I had one of those back in the day, it was an amazing printer) and has similar options available as far as extra trays, duplex units, etc. It's also ethernet connected (the n version) and SNMP-manageable if you have Nagios or some other system in place.

We are presently using these units as pick sheet printers in our warehouse, around 20k pages a month and no problems to date, been installed 1 year so far.

Here's a link.

We use HP, Ricoh and most recently Xerox printers in our company. If you're looking for a workhorse I could recommend the Ricoh MP 161 and although slightly older and non-color, it worked great for our department. I was also a big fan of the Xerox WorkCenter Pro 6400X and it is color. Both the Ricoh I mentioned and the HP you mentioned have the same PPM.

I don't think I can put my great stamp of approval on a HP - it seems like every day at my job I get more and more disgusted with this company.
